An Axiomatic Characterization of Causal Counterfactuals

چکیده

This paper studies the causal interpretation of counterfactual sentences using a mod-iiable structural equation model. It is shown that two properties of counterfactuals, namely, composition and eeectiveness, are sound and complete relative to this interpretation , when recursive (i.e., feedback-less) models are considered. Composition and eeectiveness also hold in Lewis's closest-world semantics, which implies that for recur-sive models the causal interpretation imposes no restrictions beyond those embodied in Lewis's framework. A third property, called reversibility, holds in nonrecursive causal models but not in Lewis's closest-world semantics, which implies that Lewis's axioms do not capture some properties of systems with feedback. Causal inferences based on counterfactual analysis are exempliied and compared to those based on graphical models.

Causal models have no complete axiomatic characterization

Markov networks and Bayesian networks are effective graphic representations of the dependencies embedded in probabilistic models. It is well known that independencies captured by Markov networks (called graph-isomorphs) have a finite axiomatic characterization. This paper, however, shows that independencies captured by Bayesian networks (called causal models) have no axiomatization by using eve...

A causal theory of counterfactuals

" A Causal Theory of Counterfactuals " (forthcoming in Nous) I develop an account of counterfactual conditionals using " causal models " , and argue that this account is preferable to the currently standard account in terms of " similarity of possible worlds " due to David Lewis and Robert Stalnaker. I diagnose the attraction of counterfactual theories of causation, and argue that it is illusory.

Counterfactual thinking and ascriptions of cause and preventability.

Research suggests that counterfactuals (i.e., thoughts of how things might have been different) play an important role in determining the perceived cause of a target outcome. Results from 3 scenario studies indicate that counterfactual content overlapped primarily with thoughts of how an outcome might have been prevented (preventability ascriptions) rather than with thoughts of how it might hav...

Agent Morality via Counterfactuals in Logic Programming

This paper presents a computational model, via Logic Programming (LP), of counterfactual reasoning with applications to agent morality. Counterfactuals are conjectures about what would have happened, had an alternative event occurred. In the first part, we show how counterfactual reasoning, inspired by Pearl’s structural causal model of counterfactuals, is modeled using LP, by benefiting from L...

Making Things Happen: A Theory of Causal Explanation

Despite its clarity and eloquence, Woodward’s wonderful book does not wear its virtues on its sleeve. You need the whole shirt. I aim to let those virtues show a bit more, and that requires some background to explain what Woodward has accomplished. Philosophical theories come chiefly in two flavors, Socratic and Euclidean. Socratic philosophical theories, whose paradigm is The Meno, advance an ...
